Please note the listing below provides a general guideline for key dates in the tax calendar. However, with each year, be aware that holidays may shift dates and require adjustments. Consult the IRS website for details.

January 15th – Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment
This is the due date for paying your 4Q estimated tax, however you may postpone this payment (using form 1040-ES) until January 31st if you file your return (form 1040) and pay any tax due by February 1st.

February 1st – W-2, 1098, and 1099 Forms
You should receive these forms by the 1st of February as issuers are required to send them out by January 31st. If you are required to issue these forms for employees or contractors, for example, be sure to mail them by this date.

February 1st – Tax Return Due
If you missed your 4Q estimated tax deadline on January 15th, you may still avoid penalty if you file your tax return by this date and pay any taxes that are due.

February 15th – File New W-4 Forms
If you were exempt from income tax withholdings last year, you must file a new W-4 form by today to continue your exemption for this year.

March 15th – Corporations
File your calendar year income tax return (form 1120 or 1120-A) and pay any taxes due. You may apply for an automatic six month extension using form 7004; however you will be required to make an estimated tax payment.

March 15th – S Corporations
File your calendar-year tax return (form 1120S) and pay any taxes due. Send each shareholder a copy of Schedule K-1 (form 1120S) or a substitute Schedule K-1. You may apply for an automatic six-month extension with form 7004, but you must pay any taxes due.

March 15th – S Corporation Election
If you want to be treated as an S corporation beginning in the new calendar year, file form 2553. If this form is filed late, S treatment will begin with the following calendar year.

March 15th – Electing Large Partnerships
Provide each partner with a copy of Schedule K-1 (form 1065-B). This due date is effective for the first March 15 following the close of the partnership's tax year and applies even if the partnership seeks an extension of time.

April 15th – Tax Return Due
Your annual income tax return is due, unless you file for an extension until Oct. 15.

April 15th – File For Extension
If you want an automatic time extension for filing your tax return, complete and file form 4868. This will give you until October 15th to file your return. To avoid a penalty, however, be sure to pay any taxes that are due on April 15th.

April 15th – Individual Retirement Accounts or Roth IRAs
This is the deadline for making contributions to IRAs or Roth IRAs for prior tax year.

April 15th – Estimated Tax Payment
Your first quarter estimated tax payment for the current year is due.

April 15th – State Tax Returns Most state tax returns are due on this date however you should check with your specific state to be certain. Note several states automatically extend the filing time for those who have filed for a federal extension.

April 15th – Household Employers
If you paid cash wages of a specified amount (check the IRS website for details) last year to a household employee, file Schedule H (form 1040) with your income tax return and report any employment taxes by April 15th.

June 15th – Estimated Taxes Due
Your second quarter estimated tax payment for the current year (using form 1040-ES) is due.

September 15th – Estimated Taxes Due
Your third quarter estimated tax payment for the current year (using form 1040-ES) is due.

October 15th – Income Tax Return Due
Your current income tax return is due if you filed an extension request using form 4868.

December 31st – Deduction Deadline
The last date to make payments that can be deducted from your income tax return for the current year.
